Let's Shop! A German Supermarket Tour

This is a short and sweet blog posting about a local supermarket in my current town of Eppelheim, Germany. The supermarket chain is called Kaufland's and the size of it puts even Walmart to shame! Here are a few items I'd like to point out to those that have never had the pleasure of visiting this German supermarket chain...

It's true - Germans LOVE their sausages. There are several aisles just for different types of sausages, canned, jarred, dried, smoked and fresh ones. The choices are overwhelming! I've tried a few and so far they taste pretty familiar - like hotdogs and keilbasa.

This section makes me smile a bit - I think it's the "american" shelf with BBQ sauce and "texicana salsa".

Steak is extremely expensive here - it is usually imported. At 28 euros/kilo that works out to about $17USD/pound. It makes you think twice before having steak for dinner.

All milk comes in these cartons. The flavor is pretty good and cost about .65 euro for a liter.

BEER! Again there is ALOT of it! and cheap too. The beer doesn't come in 6 or 12 packs of 12 oz. bottles, but individual .5 liter bottles at around .70 euros each (if you do the math it works out to about 4 US dollars for a 6-pack of beer). Unfortunately there is not many kinds of beers - mostly pilsners, hefewizens, and bocks.

For some reason beer mixed with soda seems to be popular. I tried it once, its about as good as it sounds. This one looks to be alcohol-free.
