I attended the LA SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) Conference this past weekend. This is my third national SCBWI conference I've been to so though I do treasure the knowledge and wisdom I extract from it, I also don't take is as seriously. Life is too short! I bring my spiffed up portfolio, but now I know that whether or not it gets any attention my main goal is to LEARN and more importantly...BE MYSELF.
There were several fantastic keynote speeches by Mac Barnett, Richard Peck, Laurie Halse Anderson, and Jarrett Krosoczka. Inspiring. Funny.
I had the pleasure of illustrator Pat Cummings to review my portfolio and received some valuable feedback.
I went to several workshops including that of author/illustrator David Weisner, Simon & Schuster art director Laurent Linn, and Giuseppe Castellano at Penguin Random House - and I learned some interesting tidbits.
I went to a comedy workshop held by Lin Oliver and Henry Winkler. I had never heard hi speak before (other than in his acting) and found him to be funny, engaging, and incredibly warm and encouraging.
And the most important thing I took away from the 2013 LA SCBWI Conference is the school librarian I met. Let's just say you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. (was that a bad pun?)
